By Dr. Helen Hogue – Associate Professor of Behavioural Health Sciences, Australian Catholic University

The seminar was attended by coordinators, associate coordinators, and several subject teachers from kindergarten to Grade VIII.

Dr. Helen began her talk by highlighting the importance of psychology and its crucial role in promoting mental health and well-being in today’s world. She discussed topics such as social cognition, evolutionary psychology, teaching, and learning.

A significant part of her session focused on enhancing students’ attention span, improving sitting tolerance, and managing distractions during class. Dr. Helen suggested incorporating short five-minute breaks after prolonged lessons to improve student engagement.

She also shared methods to optimize study habits, emphasizing the importance of maintaining consistent sleep patterns, particularly during exams. Dr. Helen explained that disrupted sleep could cause previously learned and revised material to fade from memory.

Additionally, she shed light on the relationship between brain function, behaviour, and the networking of neural cells, which are responsible for regulating our day-to-day activities.

The seminar concluded with Dr. Helen introducing the Australian Catholic University and its diverse range of study programs available in Australia.
